How to Look After Your Gaming Console
Updated 3 September 2026 4 min readBy Tech Repairs Dundee

Keep your PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch in good condition with practical tips for preventing overheating, dust and port damage.
Gaming consoles require proper ventilation, careful handling and regular maintenance. Looking after your PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch can help prevent overheating, damaged ports and other common faults.
Give the Console Enough Ventilation
Keep your console in an open area with space around its ventilation openings. Avoid placing it inside a tightly enclosed cabinet or directly against a wall. Do not cover the console while it is operating, and avoid placing other devices on top of it.Keep It Away From Dust
Dust can collect inside the fan and heatsink, reducing cooling performance. This may cause loud fan noise, overheating, poor performance or unexpected shutdowns. Clean around the external vents carefully. If the console continues to overheat, it may require professional internal cleaning.Position the Console Securely
Place the console on a stable surface where it cannot easily be knocked over. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance regarding vertical or horizontal positioning and use the appropriate stand where required.Protect the HDMI Port
HDMI ports can be damaged if the cable is pulled, bent or forced into the socket. Make sure the plug is correctly aligned before inserting it, and avoid moving the console while cables are connected. If the screen flickers, shows no signal or only works when the cable is held at an angle, the HDMI port may need inspection or replacement.Shut the Console Down Properly
Avoid repeatedly disconnecting the power while the console is running. Use the normal shutdown option to reduce the risk of corrupted files or storage problems.Keep the System Updated
Install official system and game updates. Updates can improve stability, security and compatibility.Take Care of Controllers
Store controllers safely and avoid dropping them. Stick drift, damaged charging ports and unresponsive buttons are common problems that may be repairable.Do Not Ignore Overheating
If your console displays a temperature warning, becomes extremely hot or shuts down during games, stop using it until the cause has been identified. Continuing to use an overheating console could make the problem worse.Console Repairs in Dundee
