Buying a gaming PC in 2026: prebuilt vs custom build, and where the money should go
The parts worth paying for, the ones people overspend on, and how a build tested in a Dundee workshop differs from a drop-shipped box.
Most gaming PC regret comes from a budget spent in the wrong order: a headline graphics card paired with a weak power supply, a single stick of RAM, or a case with no real airflow. Get the priorities right and a build stays comfortable for years instead of months.
This is the same advice we give across the counter, whether you buy one of our in-stock builds or bring us a parts list to assemble.
Start with the resolution and refresh rate you actually play at
The monitor sets the target, not the other way round. A 1080p 144Hz panel and a 1440p 165Hz panel want very different graphics cards, and 4K asks for a card most people don't need. Tell us the screen and the games and the spec falls out of it.
- 1080p high refresh — mid-range GPU, strong CPU for competitive shooters
- 1440p — the sweet spot for value in 2026; GPU takes the biggest share
- 4K or VR — top-tier GPU, generous cooling, quality power supply, no shortcuts
Where the money should go
- GPU: the largest single slice for pure gaming — it decides your frame rate more than anything else
- CPU: enough to not bottleneck the card. Extra cores matter for streaming, editing and simulation, not for most games
- RAM: 32GB dual-channel is the practical baseline now; two matched sticks, never one
- Storage: an NVMe SSD for Windows and your current games, with a second drive for the library
- PSU: a quality unit with headroom and modern connectors. This is where cheap builds quietly fail
- Cooling and case: airflow beats RGB. Good intake and exhaust keeps clocks high and fans quiet
Prebuilt vs custom build
Boxed prebuilts win on price when stock is being cleared, but the savings usually come from the parts nobody lists on the box: the power supply, the cooler, the case fans and the motherboard's VRM. Those are exactly the parts that limit upgrades later.
A custom build costs a little more up front and gives you a documented parts list, a sensible upgrade path and cable routing you can actually work in. We assemble, update firmware, install and activate Windows, apply BIOS memory profiles and stress-test CPU and GPU under sustained load before anything leaves the workshop.
Upgrading instead of replacing
Plenty of machines don't need replacing at all. A GPU swap, a move to 32GB of RAM, an NVMe drive, a fresh cooler and paste, or a clean Windows install often gets a three-year-old PC playing current titles happily. Bring it in and we'll tell you honestly whether an upgrade or a new build is the better spend.
- Stuttering with acceptable average frames — usually RAM capacity or a slow drive
- Frame rate drops after a few minutes — thermal throttling; cooling and paste
- Crashes under load in demanding games — very often the power supply
- Long load times and a sluggish desktop — SATA or mechanical drive still holding Windows
