iPhone audio faults: greyed-out speaker, failed voice recording and slow boot
A greyed-out loudspeaker button, voice recordings that fail and a phone that takes an age to boot are usually one fault, not three. Here is what causes it and how it is repaired.
One of the most misunderstood iPhone faults looks like several problems at once: the loudspeaker button greys out during a call, the Voice Memos app refuses to record, Siri stops responding and the handset takes noticeably longer to boot than it used to. Owners usually try a factory reset, lose their data, and end up with exactly the same symptoms.
It is almost always a single hardware fault on the audio circuit, and it is repairable.
Why the speaker icon greys out
iOS greys out the loudspeaker and speakerphone controls when the audio codec circuit stops responding. The phone is not muting itself on purpose — it simply cannot see a working audio path, so it hides the controls rather than letting you switch to a dead output. The same circuit handles microphone input, which is why voice recording, Siri and video sound fail at the same time.
The usual causes are:
- Cracked solder joints on the audio codec or its supporting components, often after a drop or a bend to the chassis.
- Corrosion from earlier liquid exposure, which can appear weeks or months later.
- A damaged flex or connector after a previous screen or battery replacement carried out without a torque-controlled reassembly.
Why the phone also boots slowly
During start-up iOS polls each hardware subsystem. When the audio circuit does not answer, the boot sequence waits for a timeout on every attempt before continuing, so a healthy 20-second boot stretches out. A slow boot alongside dead audio is a strong indicator that the fault is on the board rather than in the speaker itself.
How we check it before quoting
- Confirm the fault is not software: a clean boot test and an audio route test, so nobody pays for board work that a settings issue explains.
- Test the loudspeaker and earpiece modules independently — occasionally the module really is the fault, which is a much smaller job.
- Inspect the board under a microscope for corrosion, lifted pads and previous repair damage.
- Measure the codec supply rails and check continuity across the audio circuit.
What the repair involves
Where the module is fine and the board is at fault, the work is micro-soldering: the affected area is cleaned of corrosion, joints on the codec are reflowed or the chip is removed and reballed, and any damaged supporting components are replaced. The phone is then tested through several boot cycles with call audio, speakerphone, microphone, Siri and video recording all verified.
Turnaround is typically a couple of working days because board-level work is tested over multiple cycles rather than rushed.
What you can do first
- Back up now, before any repair or reset. Board-level audio work does not touch your data, but any phone with a hardware fault deserves a current backup.
- Do not keep resetting the handset. It will not fix a hardware fault and you may lose data.
- Mention any past liquid contact or previous repair, however minor — it changes where we look first.
